Performance

We want to share our stage with you! Performing is an important aspect of any dancers experience. When dancers and choreographers share their love of dance with their community it creates a positive shared experience. Southern Ohio Dance Festival accepts dance works from students and professionals alike. We are currently accepting solos, duets, trios, and larger group works for our Saturday evening concert. Both SODF concerts are professionally produced on the beautiful Vern Riffe Center for the Arts Main Stage Theater. Dance works should be well composed, rehearsed and showcase technical ability. Dance pieces will not be accepted to perform if they are offensive in any way.

Adjudication

Student pieces will be adjudicated by the Southern Ohio Dance Festival Faculty. Ratings will be based on technical ability, choreography, interpretation, and overall performance. Student performance pieces will be presented with adjudication awards on Sunday after the coLAB performance.

Professional companies will not be adjudicated on the student rating scale but will be given feedback if requested by the company director.

Rating I: Superior
An outstanding performance with very few technical errors and exemplifying choreographic and artistic expression. This rating should be reserved for the truly outstanding performance.

Rating II: Excellent
A strong performance in many respects, however not worthy of the highest rating due to minor technical errors in performance.

Rating III: Good
An acceptable performance showing accomplishment and marked promise, but lacking in one or more essential qualities.

Rating IV: Fair
A poor performance showing many technical errors, poor musical conception, lack of interpretation, incomplete choreography, or lacking in any of the other essential qualities.

Rating V: Poor
A very poor performance indicating deficiencies in most of the essential factors, and indicating that much careful attention should be given to the fundamentals of good performance. This rating should be used sparingly and only when it is possible to cite major faults.

coLAB Concert

The 2025 Southern Ohio Dance Festival will host a brand new choreography experience. SODF Faculty will work with a specific age group to create a brand new never before seen dance work that will be showcased on the final day of the festival! This opportunity will allow all dancers participating in the festival a chance to work with professional choreographers from around the country and perform in a professionally produced concert.

Dancers will be given specific costuming parameters before their arrival to the festival. Costumes will be simple and items they already own!

Scholarship Awards

Scholarships will be awarded to a number of dancers based on their performance in classes, on stage, and throughout the weekend on their continual commitment to building a strong dance community. Scholarship's will be awarded by the SODF faculty and directors on the final day of the festival after the coLAB concert.
